At eight months pregnant, I learned the most painful truth of my life — my husband had been cheating. My whole world fell apart overnight. My mother told me not to make any rash decisions, that I needed to “think about the baby.” So I stayed. Then he reached into his coat pocket and handed me an envelope. Inside was a key — to the small apartment he had secretly fixed up for me. “It’s yours,” he said. “You and the baby will be safe there. I’ve already moved your things.”

At that moment, I broke down — not out of sadness, but out of relief. My father hadn’t just given me shelter. He had given me freedom.
