Firefighters Warn It’s Often Overlooked

Every night, millions of people lock their doors, turn off the lights, and head to bed believing their home is safe. But according to firefighters and home safety experts, one small habit in the kitchen could be the difference between a quiet night and a devastating fire. It’s not something dramatic, and it’s not an appliance most people think twice about. That’s exactly why it’s so dangerous.

The appliance experts warn about most often is the toaster — or toaster oven. It sits on the counter, used daily, and feels harmless. But unlike many larger appliances, toasters are designed to generate intense heat very quickly. Crumbs, grease, and food particles build up inside over time, creating a hidden fire risk even when the appliance isn’t actively in use.

Fire departments repeatedly report that overnight kitchen fires often start when a toaster is left plugged in. A power surge, faulty wiring, or internal short can trigger heating elements without warning. Because this usually happens while everyone is asleep, smoke spreads before anyone notices. By the time alarms go off, escape becomes much harder.

Toaster ovens pose an even higher risk. Their larger heating elements, timers, and electronic components increase the chances of malfunction. Many models also stay warm internally long after use. Leaving them plugged in overnight gives a potential spark hours to turn into a full-blown emergency.

What makes this especially dangerous is how normal it feels. People unplug space heaters and kettles, but toasters are often ignored because they’re small and familiar. Firefighters say that familiarity leads to complacency — and complacency leads to accidents.

The solution is simple and takes only seconds. After your last use of the kitchen at night, unplug your toaster or toaster oven completely. Empty the crumb tray regularly and keep the area around it clear of paper towels or cloths. These small steps dramatically reduce the risk of nighttime fires.

Home safety isn’t always about expensive systems or alarms. Sometimes it’s about one forgotten plug. Unplugging a single appliance before bed could protect your home, your family, and your life — and it’s a habit worth starting tonight.
