She always said towels shouldn’t smell clean — they should smell like nothing at all.
Her secret was so simple I laughed the first time she showed me… but it works every single time.
Here’s what she did:
She never used fabric softener. Ever.
It coats towel fibers with waxy residue, trapping moisture and bacteria — that’s where the musty smell comes from.
Instead, once a month she washed towels with:
- Hot water
- ½ cup white vinegar (in the rinse cycle)
That’s it.
The vinegar breaks down buildup, kills odor-causing bacteria, and resets the fibers so towels absorb water again instead of repelling it.
Then she dried them completely — no damp folding, no shortcuts.
The result?
- Towels stay fresh longer
- No sour smell
- Softer over time, not stiff
I still do it exactly her way.
Sometimes the old tricks really are the best ones.
