The television world is grieving the loss of Eric Dane, who passed away on Thursday, February 19, after battling ALS. He was 53.
Best known for his unforgettable role as Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy, Dane became a household name and a fan favorite during his years on the hit series. Last year, he publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
In a statement shared with People Magazine, his family confirmed his passing.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
The family also emphasized his determination throughout his illness:
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
His Final Public Words About ALS
In December 2025, just weeks before his passing, Dane made what would become his final public appearance. He joined a virtual Giving Tuesday panel hosted by I AM ALS and Synapticure, where he spoke candidly about his diagnosis and the emotional toll of living with the progressive disease.
His words were deeply personal and unfiltered:
“I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day, I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying,” he said. “And I was a little bit pleasantly surprised when I realized that I wasn’t built like that, because I thought for sure that was gonna be me.”
At the time, Dane had recently completed filming Brilliant Minds, portraying a patient living with ALS — a role that mirrored his own reality in a painful way. He admitted that separating himself from the character was challenging, yet he also described the experience as “cathartic.”
Despite the physical and emotional strain, he spoke about resilience and mindset. Maintaining a positive outlook, he explained, became an essential part of how he coped.
He also remained vocal about the need for awareness and research funding:
“I make sure that people are aware of what ALS is and what it’s about, and more importantly, what we can do to combat it… because it’s so rocky,” he said, referencing the many “hurdles and bureaucracy” that slow progress in treatment and research.
Even as the disease advanced, Dane chose to use his platform to advocate for change.
A Career That Touched Generations
Eric Dane’s portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan transformed him into one of television’s most recognizable figures. His character’s charm, complexity, and emotional storylines made a lasting impression on audiences.
Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Dane continued to build a diverse career in film and television, earning respect not only for his screen presence but for his willingness to take on layered and emotionally demanding roles.
In recent years, however, his advocacy work became just as defining as his acting career. His openness about ALS brought renewed attention to the condition and helped humanize a diagnosis that many still struggle to understand.
Survived by His Family
Eric Dane is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14.
Those close to him have described him as a devoted father and husband, someone whose family remained his anchor throughout his illness.
His passing marks the end of a remarkable life — one shaped by talent, perseverance, and, in his final chapter, profound courage.
