I froze. She looked emotional—on the verge of tears—and completely unaware of my presence. My husband took a step back, visibly shaken. I grabbed his arm instinctively.

He finally stammered, “Daniela? What… what are you doing here?”

She looked up at him with a trembling smile. “I’ve been looking for you for years. After what happened… I never stopped.”

At that moment, my heart dropped. I looked at John, who avoided my eyes.

He finally sighed. “This is my wife… Maria. Daniela and I… we used to be engaged. Over a decade ago. I thought she had left the country after her father—”

“I didn’t leave,” Daniela interrupted. “I was forced to. My father found out everything and took me away to Italy. I wrote you letters, John. Hundreds. You never answered.”

My head was spinning. I was expecting to tell my husband we were going to have a child. Now I stood next to him, watching a piece of his past unfold like a drama I wasn’t prepared for.

Daniela finally stood up, brushing the sand from her knees, her voice now steadier. “I just needed to see you once. To know you were okay. That you’re happy.”

John reached for my hand and pulled me closer. “I am happy,” he said quietly, “this is my family now.”

Daniela nodded, smiled softly with tears in her eyes, and whispered, “Then I can finally let go.”

As she walked away into the sunset, I finally turned to John. He looked devastated and relieved at once.

“I was going to tell you something,” I said, placing a hand on my belly.

His eyes widened. “You’re…?”

I nodded. “Yes. We’re having a baby.”

He pulled me into his arms, and we stood there, waves crashing at our feet—past and future colliding in a moment we’d never forget.
