Last year’s birthday for Grandma felt different right from the start.

She stood there in her usual spot, right behind the cakes, her hands gently folded like always. That soft little smile was on her face — the one that somehow made everything feel okay, no matter what was going on in the world. We had balloons, chocolate cake (her favorite), and a goofy birthday tablecloth that someone picked up last-minute. Everyone was smiling, joking, passing plates, but there was a heaviness in the room that no one wanted to talk about.

When it was time to light the candles, we all sang — like we always did — completely off-key and way too loud. Someone laughed in the middle, like they always do. Grandma just closed her eyes and let the song wash over her. And when we finished, instead of blowing out the candles right away, she opened her eyes and said something that made the room freeze.

“Well, I guess this will be my last birthday with you all, so let’s make it count.”

At first, we thought she was joking. Someone gave a nervous chuckle. But then she smiled again — that kind of smile that’s both sad and peaceful — and started thanking us, one by one. She didn’t cry. She didn’t make it a big moment. She just… knew.

She hugged everyone tighter than usual that night. She danced a little with my youngest cousin, even though her knees hurt. She told stories from her childhood we hadn’t heard before. She gave away some of her jewelry “just because.” And before we left, she held my hand and whispered, “You’re going to be just fine. I’ve seen it in you.”

Three months later, she passed away in her sleep. No hospital, no pain. Just peace.

We all said we wished we’d known. But the truth is — she did. And she gave us a gift that night: one last celebration, one last memory, full of love, laughter, and the kind of grace only a grandma can give.

Now, every year when her birthday comes around, we still get chocolate cake.
We still sing off-key.
And we still feel her there, smiling quietly behind the candles.
