I discovered a hidden camera in the bedroom of our Airbnb. It was already past midnight, and my heart was racing.
My husband calmly pulled a towel from the bathroom and covered it. We didn’t want confrontation — we just wanted to get through the night and report it in the morning.
At 2 a.m., we were startled awake.
The door burst open.
The Airbnb owner stormed in, furious, shouting:
“You idiots, this is a heat sensor! Not a camera!”
We were stunned.
He continued, “It’s connected to the fire alarm system! When you covered it, the temperature spiked and triggered a security alert at headquarters. I had to drive 40 minutes to shut it down before the fire department arrived!”
My husband and I looked at each other — embarrassed, relieved, and honestly still a bit suspicious.
Was it a heat sensor? Maybe.
A camera? We’ll never really know.
But what we do know:
Always read the listing.
Always inspect your Airbnb.
And maybe… don’t cover strange devices with towels unless you want a 2 a.m. wake-up call.
