The pale gray shapes stuck out from a decaying log like something straight out of a horror movie. \u201cThey looked real,\u201d he said. \u201cFor a moment, I thought I\u2019d found a crime scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But after a closer look, experts confirmed the eerie discovery wasn\u2019t human at all \u2014 it was a&nbsp;<strong>rare species of fungus known as&nbsp;<em>Xylaria polymorpha<\/em>, or \u201cDead Man\u2019s Fingers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This strange fungus grows at the base of&nbsp;<strong>rotting trees or stumps<\/strong>, feeding on decaying wood. In its early stages, it appears pale and swollen, resembling&nbsp;<strong>grayish fingers rising from the ground<\/strong>, but as it matures, it turns darker \u2014 sometimes black \u2014 and releases spores into the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its terrifying appearance, the \u201cDead Man\u2019s Fingers\u201d fungus plays a&nbsp;<strong>vital role in nature<\/strong>, breaking down dead wood and returning nutrients to the soil. Still, many who encounter it in the wild can\u2019t help but feel a chill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like the forest is trying to tell you something,\u201d one hiker wrote after spotting it. \u201cThose fingers look like they\u2019re reaching from below.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you ever see these strange shapes in the woods \u2014 don\u2019t panic. You haven\u2019t discovered a grave.
