It\u2019s hard to be a woman in Hollywood, but Sally Field has chosen to defy most of the \u2018rules\u2019 put in place.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We love her work in films like Forrest Gump<\/em>, Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em>, and Steel Magnolias<\/em>. Some of our favorite work from her, though, is not on the screen but instead in her personal approach to working against ageism and bullying in her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 78, Field<\/a> exudes the same radiance she possessed at 19 \u2013 though she\u2019s still confronting criticism about her appearance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early life and career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Field started life with some challenges, chiefly due to the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepfather, Jock Mahoney \u2013 something she revealed in her 2018 memoir, per The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her first acting gig was in the hit 60s sitcom Gidget<\/em>, a role that skyrocketed her to stardom, landing her more serious acting roles in movies like Sybil<\/em> and Norma Rae<\/em> (which earned her an Academy Award).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the years progressed, Field became known for her portrayal of strong maternal figures, in hit movies like Soap Dish<\/em> and Not Without My Daughter<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe woman I worked with, a great actress, on The Flying Nun<\/em>, grabbed me to the back of the sound stage and put a piece of paper in my hand because I was <\/strong>really depressed,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aging naturally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As she ages, Field has been vocal about approaching getting older with grace, saying in a 2016 interview with Good Housekeeping<\/a> that she has accepted her status as an \u201cold woman\u201d.
