Growing up, holidays were just ordinary days in our house. No big dinners. No special meals. Most years, we were lucky to have anything more than canned soup. So when I spent Thanksgiving 2010 at a friend\u2019s house, it felt like stepping into another world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The smell hit me first\u2014turkey, gravy, fresh rolls, things I\u2019d only seen on TV. My stomach ached from hunger, and before I could stop myself, I slipped into the kitchen, dipped a spoon into the gravy, and tasted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was the best thing I\u2019d ever eaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A warm food container. Heavy. Wrapped carefully in foil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My heart pounded as I opened it. Turkey. Potatoes. Rolls. Gravy. A full Thanksgiving meal\u2014more food than I\u2019d seen in months. Tucked underneath was a handwritten note:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor you. No kid should feel hungry today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It wasn\u2019t from my friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It was from the same woman who had scolded me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In that moment, I realized something powerful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes people speak harshly before they understand. Sometimes pride comes before compassion.
