She said you spoil babies if you pick them up too much.\u201d Rosie glanced at Eleanor, then back to me. \u201cShe put something in their bottles. She said it was medicine. She said, \u2018This will make them sleep longer so Mommy can rest.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A low murmur rippled through the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleanor\u2019s voice rose, sharp and shrill.<br>\u201cShe\u2019s lying! She doesn\u2019t understand what she saw!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pastor Miller raised a hand, trying to regain control.<br>\u201cMrs. Caldwell, please\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said again, louder now. My grief had burned down to something cold and focused. \u201cYou will not silence her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I turned to Nathan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was staring at his mother like he was seeing her for the first time. His face had drained of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe was alone with them,\u201d I said. \u201cThe night they died. You told me that. You said your mom insisted on \u2018helping.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan\u2019s mouth opened, but no sound came out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosie tugged my sleeve again.<br>\u201cThe bottles smelled funny,\u201d she added. \u201cNot like milk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church erupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gasps.<br>Whispers.<br>Someone stood up and said, \u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleanor shook her head violently.<br>\u201cThis is outrageous. You\u2019re grieving. You\u2019re looking for someone to blame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I straightened and looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cI already know who to blame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan finally spoke, his voice breaking.<br>\u201cMom\u2026 what did you give them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She looked at him then \u2014 really looked \u2014 and something in her expression shifted. Not guilt. Not remorse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was just a little,\u201d she said. \u201cSomething natural. People used it all the time when you were a baby. They were fussy. I was helping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Nathan whispered. \u201cWhat did you give them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She swallowed.<br>\u201cPoppy tea,\u201d she said. \u201cJust enough to calm them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words rang through the church like a gunshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pastor Miller sat down heavily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I felt like I was falling, but I didn\u2019t look away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe coroner said it was SIDS,\u201d Eleanor continued desperately. \u201cThey couldn\u2019t prove anything else. God knows my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I laughed then \u2014 a short, broken sound.<br>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cGod doesn\u2019t need proof. But the police do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan stepped away from her as if she were a stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou killed my sons,\u201d he said hoarsely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI loved them!\u201d she screamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou loved control,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd silence. And being right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone in the back was already dialing their phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleanor sank back into the pew, her perfect posture finally collapsing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service never finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, officers arrived. Quietly. Respectfully. They asked questions. They took notes. They asked Rosie if she could tell them what she remembered \u2014 and they listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That night, after everyone was gone, after the urns were back on the mantle where bassinets should have been, Nathan finally broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He fell to the floor and sobbed like a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI should have protected them,\u201d he cried. \u201cI should have believed you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I held him, even though my heart was shattered in places that would never fully heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weeks later, the investigation was reopened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out poppy tea leaves traces. Enough to raise questions.
