The man responsible disappeared the same day she told him. No calls. No help. No support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because of me, my mom missed her prom. She traded sparkly dresses for diapers and late-night shifts. She studied for her GED while I slept beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She never once complained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So when my own prom came around this year, I had an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still ignored her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prom day came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And my mom looked stunning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She wore a soft blue gown, styled her hair in vintage curls, and smiled like someone who was finally living a moment she had waited years to experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As we were leaving, she whispered nervously:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat if people stare? What if I ruin your night?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMom,\u201d I told her, \u201cyou built my entire life. You can\u2019t ruin anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We arrived at the school courtyard where everyone was taking photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s when Brianna appeared in a glittering dress that probably cost more than my car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She pointed at my mom and said loudly enough for everyone to hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy is SHE here? Is this prom or Bring Your Parent to School Day? How embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her friends burst out laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My mom\u2019s smile faded instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I felt anger rising in my chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But before I could say anything, someone else stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My stepdad Mike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had heard everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He walked over slowly, his expression calm but serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he looked directly at Brianna and said one simple word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The courtyard fell silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brianna rolled her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDad, it was just a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Mike said firmly. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He turned to everyone standing around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis woman raised a child alone when she was still a child herself,\u201d he said, gesturing toward my mom. \u201cShe sacrificed her prom, her youth, and countless opportunities so that her son could have a future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My mom\u2019s eyes filled with tears again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mike continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd tonight, he\u2019s giving her back a moment she never got to have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he looked at Brianna again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf you think that\u2019s embarrassing, then you\u2019ve missed the entire point of what love looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No one laughed after that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, someone started clapping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Soon the entire courtyard applauded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
