Trump framed the move as a win\u2011win: tariffs raise revenue, domestic investment surges, and Americans get a cash bonus.On Truth Social he declared: \u201cPeople that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k\u2019s are Highest EVER.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added: \u201cWe are taking in Trillions of Dollars and will soon begin paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 Trillion. Record Investment in the USA, plants and factories going up all over the place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The money\u2011machine he envisions rests on tariffs sweeping across global imports \u2014 the very trade tool under fire in the courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For example, he wrote: \u201cSo, let\u2019s get this straight??? The President of the United States is allowed (and fully approved by Congress!) to stop ALL TRADE with a Foreign Country \u2026 but is not allowed to put a simple Tariff on a Foreign Country, even for purposes of NATIONAL SECURITY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Can It Happen? The $2,000 Payout\u2019s Big Hurdles
The idea sounds compelling \u2014 but as analysts point out, it comes with two massive roadblocks: cost and legality, per The Guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sources estimate the payouts could run from $300 billion to as high as $513 billion depending on eligibility and whether children count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Economist Erica York wrote: \u201cIf the cutoff is $100,000, 150M adults would qualify, for a cost near $300 billion. \u2026 Adjusting for that, tariffs have raised $90 billion of net revenues compared to Trump\u2019s proposed $300 billion rebate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
